Once upon a time, there was a boy called Ma Liang. He liked drawing. He drew pictures with sticks (棍) because he had no money to buy a pencil.
One day, an old man came to his house and gave him a pencil, and said to him, “Only draw pictures for poor people.” After saying that, the old man disappeared. Ma Liang drew a bird with the pencil and then it changed into a real bird. He knew that pencil was a magic (有魔力的) one. So, he went round the village and drew for poor people.
Soon, the king knew the magic pencil. He asked Ma Liang to draw a tree covered with gold coins, but Ma Liang refused (拒绝). The king was very angry. He put Ma Liang into a room. But Ma Liang was a cleaver boy. He drew a key. He opened the door with it and went away.
